Scrapbooking for Kids: 5 Fun and Simple Projects to Do Together

Scrapbooking for kids, one of my favourite creative outlets, and it’s an amazing hobby to share with children. Not only does it allow kids to explore their imagination, but it also gives families a chance to bond over making something special together. Crafting memories with little ones can be an enjoyable (and often hilarious) experience. Here’s a guide to simple, fun scrapbooking projects you can do with kids that the whole family will love.

Why Scrapbooking with Kids?

Scrapbooking with children is a wonderful way to nurture their creativity while preserving precious family moments. Plus, it teaches them important skills—cutting, gluing, designing layouts, and even storytelling through images. And let’s not forget, it’s a lot of fun!

1. Mini Memory Books

Start small with mini memory books! These can be made with just a few sheets of cardstock or old cereal boxes cut down to size. Each child can have their own mini album, which they can decorate as they wish.

What You’ll Need:
Steps:
  1. Cut cardstock into small squares (10cm x 10cm works well).
  2. Have your child choose a theme for their book, like “My Favourite Things” or “Holiday Fun.”
  3. Let them fill each page with photos, stickers, or drawings.
  4. Punch holes on one side of the pages and tie them together with yarn or ribbon.
Bonus Fun:

Get the kids to personalise their books with their names, favourite colours, and maybe a self-portrait. It’s a great way to encourage creative freedom!

2. Nature-Inspired Pages

Kids love exploring the outdoors, and you can turn those nature adventures into beautiful scrapbook pages. Whether it’s collecting leaves, flowers, or shells, these nature finds can be incorporated into your layouts.

What You’ll Need:
  • Collected leaves, flowers, or small objects
  • Glue (preferably tacky glue or a glue gun with supervision)
  • Photos from the nature walk
  • Paper or cardstock
Steps:
  1. After a fun outdoor adventure, have your kids collect nature items they find interesting.
  2. Print out a couple of photos from your outing.
  3. Help them arrange the photos and nature finds onto the page.
  4. Stick everything down, and add captions or drawings that describe the day.
Feeling the Moment:

Encourage kids to think about how the page makes them feel—do the leaves remind them of how breezy the day was, or maybe how colourful everything looked?

What You’ll Need:
Steps:
  1. Start with the letter A, and let your child choose a word that starts with it (apple, ant, airplane, etc.).
  2. Cut out pictures from magazines or have them draw objects that match the letter.
  3. Create one page per letter, decorating it with pictures, stickers, and drawings.
Bonus Tip:

Turn it into a memory book by associating letters with family memories. For example, “B is for Beach – our family beach day!”

4. Sticker Stories

Every child loves stickers! In this project, stickers are the star, and the goal is to create a story around them.

What You’ll Need:
Steps:
  1. Ask your child to pick a handful of stickers that they like.
  2. Have them stick the stickers onto the page however they want.
  3. Then, help them create a little story about the scene they’ve made using the stickers.
  4. Add captions to the page, encouraging them to describe what’s happening in their sticker world.
Creative Fun:

The great thing about this project is that it doesn’t have to make sense. Kids can let their imaginations run wild!

5. Family Tree Scrapbook Page

This is a fantastic project for older kids and a wonderful way to introduce them to your family history.

What You’ll Need:
Steps:
  1. Draw or cut out a large tree on your scrapbook page.
  2. Print and cut out small photos of family members to place on the “branches.”
  3. Help your child glue the family photos onto the branches and write down each person’s name.
  4. Decorate with leaves, hearts, or any embellishments that make it unique to your family.
Making Memories:

You can make this a learning moment by sharing stories about each family member. Let your kids add their own fun facts about relatives, like “Granny loves baking cookies” or “Uncle John is funny.”

Scrapbooking Tips for Kids

  • Keep It Simple: Kids have short attention spans, so don’t make the projects too complex. Start with basic layouts and gradually introduce more elements as they become more comfortable.
  • Let Them Lead: The joy of scrapbooking with kids is seeing their creativity shine. Let them make their own decisions on how to arrange things, even if it’s a bit messy!
  • Don’t Aim for Perfection: Remember, scrapbooking with kids is about the experience, not creating flawless pages. Those little imperfections are what make the memories even more special.

Final Thoughts

Scrapbooking with kids is all about having fun, being creative, and spending quality time together. These projects are simple, engaging, and sure to spark the imagination of even the youngest scrapbookers. Not only will you create beautiful pages together, but you’ll also be building lasting memories for years to come.

So, grab some glue, stickers, and paper, and dive into the colourful world of scrapbooking with your kids. Happy scrapping
